Champix information As well as physically, this new stop smoking pill CHAMPIX also works by providing support psychologically as well. As it aids the smoker by relieving them of the cravings of nicotine, it can help a smoker to identify their smoking triggers and hence why they are smoking. For many this can be a stress reliever, habit in general, weight-loss aid or otherwise. So Champix reportedly helps smokers stop by reducing cravings but also by decreasing the pleasure derived from nicotine. If you read the releases from the FDA, it sounds like Champix could be the big breakthrough in helping people stop smoking. But if you look more closely, you should probably withhold your judgement for now. As the FDA reports in May 2006, there have been 5 randomized trials of Champix, comparing it to Zyban or placebo. What is emphasized is that 2 of the 5 trials show that on average, 44% of the people who took Champix has stopped smoking after 12 weeks, versus about 30% of the people who took Zyban and 17% who took a placebo. Well, what about the other 3 studies in which presumably Champix did not do so well? Since they aren't reported in much detail, it seems that much of what is available about Champix is slanted to the benefit of Pfizer, the maker. In fact, this sort of "hype" is common when a medication first comes on the market. Also, the successes were Pfizer funded, and included a high level of extra support to help the patient. It has been proposed that this may have been the key to the success, and that results could be quite different for patients who just receive a prescription for Champix and are left to stop on their own. |
